It is because of this breadth of expertise that over 90% of our research outputs in the REF2021 research assessment were submitted as interdisciplinary. Also, it is by exploiting this interdisciplinarity that we have been able to grow the School and increase our impact through the integration of research, knowledge exchange and teaching across the engineering disciplines.

We like to think that we're one of the broadest and friendliest communities of engineers, students and support staff in the UK. Our work spans communications, energy, manufacturing, bioengineering, informatics, sustainable use of materials, nuclear physics and chemistry and healthcare. Our strength lies in our diversity; we support each other, and we embrace individuality.

Our academics are working at the forefront of their fields, and this is reflected in the quality of our teaching and in the variety of project and industry-linked activities that our students experience during their engineering degree courses. We place emphasis on team-working and we give our students the opportunity to specialise in areas of direct interest to future employers.

Teaching methods we use include face to face lectures, small group tutorials, laboratory classes and computer-based design activity. Our staff and students develop solutions to real-world problems; they work in teams to complete projects and evaluate and present engineering solutions. Creativity and innovation is developed through open ended design problems.

We also have strong local and international collaborations, across many areas of our research. What we do, and how we do it, really is quite extraordinary and we look forward to meeting you and explaining our work to you.
