For my part I believe that the ability individuals have to give and to withhold consent is a fundamental moral power of great significance. I am thus interested in distinguishing the different challenges to the ideal of consent - from philosophy, from non-Western cultural contexts, and from empirical research - and in evaluating their force. The workshops represent a productive way to do that since they involve excellent representatives of these various challenges. Beyond that I am interested in the way that consent operates across three quite different domains - biomedical research and practice; sexual morality and the law of sexual offences; and in the principle of liberal legitimacy.
