What will we learn in this topic?

In this topic we are going to explore the different ways in which novelists can present the speech of their characters, how we can recognise and define these different forms of speech presentation and what effects are associated with these different forms.

We will concentrate on how character speech is presented in the novel, but it is worth noting now that the various presentational forms we will explore with respect to speech presentation can also be used to present the thoughts of characters, and what they write.
