Performing Translations: A Workshop and Round-Table with Industry Insiders

Thursday, 12 July 2012

This event is aimed at aspiring and professional translators, as well as people interested in working with foreign languages in the UK arts scene. Come along to have a go at 'performing' the act of translation on some texts for theatre, and then get your chance to quiz the professionals about the ins and outs of the whole production process behind introducing work from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds into UK theatres.

The morning begins with a workshop with Penny Black to listen to her experience of translating Jelinek’s Sport Play, and then have a go at 'performing' the act of translation on selected excerpts of texts for theatre.
In the second half of the morning get your chance to listen to theatre professionals about the ins and outs of the whole production process behind introducing work from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds into UK theatres.

Roundtable participants include:
Giles Croft, Artistic Director of the Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham
Peter Mikl, Director Austrian Cultural Forum, London
Berislav Juraic, Creative Producer, Just a Must Theatre Company, London
Vanda Butkovic, Theatre Director, Just a Must Theatre Company, London
Penny Black, Translator, London
Karen Juers-Munby, Lecturer and Dramaturg, Lancaster (chairing)
