fig 3 p 11 in which the shaded projection marks the
position of a trace on the soffit of every arch, which
appears like that of a cusp or tracery chiselled awry: the
arches are bricked up: so that the depth to back of
[diagram] capital cannot be seen: I regret the injury of this palace
more than all I have seen yet.
I did not get up to the top story on the facade, seen
in Dag: but I did behind; when a noble single shaft
in the middle of the alley bridge carries a horizontal plinth
fig 1 P 12 l Palace book with magnificent bold dentil.
The shaft is like one of those of the upper story of facade.

to the angles as usual - but especially simple ones
hard edged. [diagram] so but thoroughly well cut
and very grand - and this shaft stands on plinth

Dag: the thing in the centre is a large antique like
Roman emperor head - under a starred semicircular
canopy, and supported on a vast bracket set on a
small shaft in the form of a capital, between the
two arches, as opposite: the carving of the huge capital
is very fine.
