BACON PALACE
fig 3 p 11 in which the shaded projection marked the positn[io]
of a trace on the soffit of every arch, which appears
like that of a cusp or tracery chiselled awry: the arches
are bricked up: so that the depth to back of capital
cannot be seen: I regret the injury of this palace more
than all I have seen yet.
I did not get up to the top story on the facade, seen
in Dog: but I did behind, when a noble single shaft
in the middle of the alley bridge carries a horizontal
plinth fig 1 P 12 1 Palace book with magnificent bold
dentil. The shaft is like one of those of the upper story
of facade noble leaf head - simple and swelling Fig 2
same page - with a base - fig 3 same page - having
leaves to the angles as usual - but especially single ones
hard edged. so but thoroughly well out and
very grand - and this shaft stands on plinth fig 4 with
anothergrand dentil below, under this come the arches des-
cribed at p 112 above, and vid Dog; the thing in
the centre is a large antique like Roman emperor head -
under a starred semicircular canopy, and supported on
a vast bracket set on a small shaft in the form of a
capital, between the two arches, as opposite:[%] the carving
of the huge capital is very fine.
