                                                                      		of added pedestal.  Conditions 1st.  When Short
                                                                      		shafts of precious material must be supported at a
                                                                      		certain height.
                                                                      		Cond. 2nd.  When shafts are raised on Parapets, as of
                                                                      		Cloisters, balconies, etc, which balconies are afterwards
                                                                      		opened, as by balustrades, or entirely leaving the shaft
                                                                      		on intermediate pedestals.
                                                                      		Cond. 3rd.  When a peculiar Principality is to be given
                                                                      		for to a shaft, as in those of Porches, &c, For a shaft without
                                                                      		a pedestal has not importance enough for this:  and while
                                                                      		rows of shafts on pedestals be fantastic) single or
                                                                      		double entrances shafts would be meagre without them.
                                                                      		The proportion of the bases of Monza (1) page 43 1 N is in
                                                                      		its place peculiarly beautiful.
