Pedestals of Shafts. All these above considerations belong to the
absolute base of the shaft, that which is by the Lombards,
set on the back of the beasts: Next consider the con-
dition of added pedestal. Conditions 1st. When Short
shafts of precious material must be supported at a
certain height.
Con.d 2nd. When shafts are raised on Parapets, as of
Cloisters, balconies, etc, which balconies are afterwards
opened, as by balustrades, or entirely leaving the shaft
on intermediate pedestals.
Cond. 3rd. When a peculiar Principality is to be given
to a shaft, as I those of Porches, etc, For a shaft that
a pedestal has not importance enough for this; and while
rows of shafts on pedestals be fantastic) single or
double entrances shafts would be meagre without them.
The proportion of the bases of Monza (1) page 43 1 N is in
its plave peculiarly beautiful.
