Casa Falier. Nothing is more remarkable than the exquisite precision
of these early capitals in the torch: and their grace
of line, as compared with the blundering richness of the
florid ones: I happened to-day to pass from the best
example of the florid capital I have yet found - the
palace near Post office (Cavalli?) to the Casa Falier;
It was passing from stone mason’s work to the most delicate
sculptors: The lines of the Falier capitals are
drawn with a precision which no cinque cento work could
possibly surpass: and not one line is thrown away
Seen near, they are the most incomparable study I
have yet had in Venice, but their effect, seen from
a below, is not so good as Byzantine work, they are
too fine to be traceable in distance. They should be
compared carefully with the 10th house, p 12 Housebook I
and that beyond Rialto.
No 137 is the second capital from the left; in first
story I its section 2 section below joint in another, the
central shaft. 3 section along line a in 5 i.e. semicircularly
through roots of the two upper lobes: (Central
lobe and one below to the left) 4 section along root of
the leaf (on the roll) to its central ribs. There are
three capitals on the main story like this one, the capitals
of Istrian stone, the shafts of sugary marble; but
