134 124 No 179, 180. couch and figure, the whole way from the shoulder to the feet. The Sarcophagus has above it a l[h]eaf plinth which for composition I think unrivalled, figs 1 and 2 No 179 give an angle of it - underneath in centre one of the usual Christ’s half figure out of tomb hard, but fine - the Madonna still left on one side - most beauti- ful in its action - projecting on a bracket from the sar- cophagus. Round these principal figures are eight small bas reliefs, fillingthe angles, four above, representing the acts of Case Grande, 4 below - architectural - of the towns in which they were done; the battle of Vice[a]nza on the right, I have drawn: Padua next to the left where Case Grande is not seen. but the soldiers in Comical helmets advance under their oblong shields as high as themselves - with the ladder all the way down - in the two others he is receiving key[g]s of towns; The fffigy on horseback on the top is much broken; it has been finished on both sides - the armour richly chased - the crest thrown back is of a separate piece, bound on with iron. San Zeno. The best examples of the peculiar truncated early c[v]apital I have seen are the two shafts which carry the arches of the entrance to the crypt at San Zeno. One is set behind the other. The section of both shafts is the truncated 4 foil. fig 1 No 180 but they are set on their bases as in fig 2. when F. is the front towards the[w] west end or entrance end
