ST GREGORIO
side of the arch which is drawn, it at first escaped my
eye, but on the other side the greatest change is all at
once: the roses in the lower of the two white voussoirs
becoming smaller by at least ½ inch on each side than
those of the red voussoir below; the three at the top
are given larger in fig 4, showing the reason of the
diminuative in thesquares becoming rhombars.
Fig 2 gives the section and elevation of either the jamb
or archivlt: and fig 3 their base, remarkable for its
b[v]old dogt, close to ground, the recesses of the chanfer
at the great cable C run down through this base, (the base
going round the cable) till they reach the lower end
roll of the base - over which at the angle is laid a richly
leavedshield - now much defaced - but evidently of a luxu-
riant time: The roses, divided by an angular incision,
are like those of the water door: The leaf rich plinth ab
above the square door looks like an interpolation: I must
consider it carefully. There has doubtless been a finial
above: but it is gone; The tympanum is glazed.
