of the touches of shade on these apitals: and their
delicious value and point seen from below: though
above, they have not even the usual Byzantine artifice of
undercutting far less the precise lines and delicate
chiselling of the Fondaco de Turchi. They are every
way blunt and miserable in cutting but the design so
good and the point of shadh -so set - witness the wreath
at p 50 when the stems are carefully rounded and deep cut
down - though not under - and where the use of the
(ivy?) leaf is peculiarly dextrous: the pattern of leaf
is varied on every one of the shafts that have ut, but is
the same in style.
The Gothic work is later: and as far as I could see, very
good; I think middle of 14th century, or perhaps later
the features of the Venice well cut and refined.
In fig 1 the section of capital gives the leaves of the
rude imitative Corinthian one, Note the strange shape of
the bell like St mark’s inside.
