DUCAL PALACE SERIES OF CAPITALS
2. Traganus imp. crowned, a sword in rt sceptre in left
hand.
3. "A U I A N U S Agustus" Imperator. A globe in rt
hand with "mundus paxis" on it, sceptre in left.
The Sixth has again coarsely worked heads.
The Seventh, (between the sixth and this, is the first
open arch of the lower arcade. it is described at p 8
Palace book.
The Eighth Figure at p 8 1 Gothic book. There are no
inscriptions on this capital.
1. Arion, with a common fiddle, and a cup ending in a
long porboscis like horn. he is on his dolphin drawn
at p 28 palace book: he is playing with a curious
Scoth fiddler like twich of the brow, sway of the head
and j[k]erk of his ugly pug nose, wonderfully felt: Yet no
real grotesque approaching that of the north.
2. Figure with curly heari; ends below in two bears paws
capitally laid upon the foliage; has a guitar, which it
plays with a beat double stringed bow or plectrum
held between the forefinger and thumb and passing over
two middle fingers while the little finger is bent; I
think the old woman described at p 22 palace book, as
"drawing double threads through frame," is playing this
instrument - (There can be no doubt of it, I see, by her
companion)
3. A monstrous but powerfully cut head, fig 1 p 29
1 Palace book, founded on a Creole or Negro type
