ST MARKS FACADE UPPER STORY
This line I have marked with blue over the red, for
greater clearness.
Then i marks the piercing i in No 171 when the basket
work means to be cut clean, but is cut in to the blue line
From b to g it is the surface of the lily which as
as seen in No 171, falls entirely within the basket work.
The lily itself is cut down to a thirdlevel, which is
somewhat roughly chiselled, the lily is nowhere cutn
clear, but well undercut so i[a]s to fefine it all sharply;
and nearly 3/4 of an inch deep. Then h2 f is the profile
of the basket work on the angle -it would be a little
more sloping but follows close on the lily line - which
being here given through the side (the centre of lily
makes the f h2 hardly slope enough But h2i always comes
vertical - returning even a little perhaps twoards i.
The flower cornice I have drawn to the wrong line it should
of course come only to c. Its leaves form a pointed
instead of a round arch, and it is more vertical than that
Upper stories of St Marks.
I saw to-day that there were three distinct periods of
transition - if not four, in the Gothic work of the upper
story The niches and statues on the north side are pure
