No 171, 172 St Marks. Façade. Upper story. 205
This line I have marked with blue over the red, for
greater clearness.
Then i marks the piercing i in No 171 when the
basket work means to be cut clean {but is cut in to the blue line}: From b to g it is the
surface of the lily which as seen in No 171, falls entirely
within the basket work. the lily itself is cut down to
a third level, which is somewhat roughly chiselled, the lily
is nowhere undercut clear, but well undercut so as
to define it all sharply; and nearly 3/4 of an inch deep.
Then h2 f is the profile of the basket work on the angle
-it would be a little steeper more sloping but follows close on the
lily line - which being here given through the
side (the centre of lily makes the f h2 hardly slope enough
But h2 i always comes vertical - returning even a little
perhaps twoards i.
The flower cornice I have drawn to the wrong line
it should of course come only to c. Its leaves form a
pointed instead of a round arch
and it is more vertical than that
