fol. 48r [fol. 47v is blank] 'Truths of Colour' (Pt II, Sn I, Ch V) (3.160-61)

     											25
Again . a colour in association with other colours . is a totally different thing
from the same colour seen by itself . It has a distinct and peculiar
power upon the retina dependent on its association. The colour
of any object therefore , is not <so much characteristic of the object
5 itself , as of the situation in which it is placed> more dependent
upon the nature of the object itself and the eye beholding it . than
on the colour of the objects near it . In this respect also therefore
     it is no characteristic .
#52#< It is farther evident - that he who errs in form . <at once vio> tells
10 a direct falsehood <against> {about} nature . and implies at once a series of
contradictions and impossibilities . He who represents a piece of
crag with a false cleavage - sets at defiance every law of nature
employed in its production - and produces a monster which
the world must be fresh created - and every one of its particles
15 endowed with fresh affinities, to render possible . But he who
errs in colour - however far , <is not contrary to truth - but has only
fallen short of it . ^ {or exaggerated it} it is a falsehood of degree . not of kind .
He who tells me there> are 45 people , when there are 50 . is not
{so} contrary to truth <- as he who should> tell me there were 50 cows .
20 But he who errs in colour only supposes what a change of light. - or of
secreted matter - or of some external property of surface independent of the
nature of the thing . might render possible to any extent : >
