fol. 69r [fol. 68v is blank]	'Of Truth of Space … Power of the Eye' (Pt II, Sn II, Ch V) (3.327-28) *

becomes greater until at last the front of the house itself becomes a
flat. pale space - <telling us a simple> in which *there is still however
a kind of richness and chequering <& true> observable. caused by the details tone
in it - which . though totally merged & lost in the mass - have still an
5 influence on the texture of that mass - and finally - the whole
house becomes itself a light or dark spot - which we can plainly see -
     but cannot tell what it is - nor know it from a rock - <or> a <piece> {bit}
of cloth<es> drying - or any other white or dark object.
<Now - what I particularly> wish to insist on - is the state of vision in
10 which all the details of an object are seen - and yet seen in such
confusion and disorder that we cannot in the least tell what they are.
It is not mist between us and the object - still less is it shade -
     It is a confusion . a <want of outline> {mystery}* - an interfering of undecided
lines with each other - not a diminution of their number - ^ {observe.} window
15 & door - architrave & frieze, all are there - it is no cold & vacant
mass of nothing - it is everything - full & rich & abundant - & yet
you cannot see a single <thing> {form} so as to know what it is . Observe
your friends face as he is coming up to you . First it is a white
spot. Now it is a face - but <observe> - you cannot see the two eyes
20 & the mouth distinctly - even as <it> spots - you see a confusion of lines -
a something - which you know from experience is indicative of a face
     <but you see> {a something which is} neither spots - nor line<s> - nor mouth - nor
     eyes - <but a vague>.
