of imitation not only do not imply their presence of <many ideas of truth> {<them>} -
but even
are inconsistent with <it> {them} . and that pictures which imitate ^ {& deceive} . are
never true .
But this is not the place for the proof of this . At present we have only to
insist on the third - last - & greatest distinction between ideas of truth &
5 of imitation : *< that the one are[?] the contemplation of what a thing is - and the other
of what it is not . <He who receives from a picture - or a sentence - the statement
of a fact> . A form ^ {of outline} laid on canvass. is as much a real form as if it were
caused
by some material object. We contemplate that form as a reality . It is as much
the form of a tree as if the impression had been made by the tree itself. A
10 colour is equally a real colour . whether given to the eye by sky or by the brush .
that the one is a contemplation of what a thing is - and the other of
what it is like . but it not . The colour of a true painting is not like the
colour of the sky ^ {or earth}. it is the colour of the sky ^ {or earth} . The forms of a
true
drawing <is> {are} not like the forms of boughs or limbs . They are the forms of

{the same} form - whether given
by air or brushes - boughs or strokes - <But> {But projection - the great aim of
imitation .} In receiving an idea
of truth then - we perceive merely that the idea we receive now . is the same
which we {have} received from nature - Whether suggested by a word - a sound
or a symbol - does not matter - it is the idea of a certain fact which we
