fol. 34r [fol. 33v is blank] 'Of Ideas of Beauty' (Pt I, Sn I, Ch VI) (3.111?)

I refer also to the head of simple beauty. The moment the intellect has
any thing to do with its power. The idea as we shall see in the next
section . comes partially under the class which for want of a better name
I shall call ideas of Relation
5 It is very seldom that ideas of beauty are received simply . and without
cooperation of the intellect, but this need no prevent us from marking
the evident & clear distinction between the two species of ideas . The difference
which we should perceive in the sensation received from the contemplation
of two coloured windows of the same design - one in a cathedral - the other
10 in an assembly room. may indicate the degree of pleasure which is dependent
on ideas of relation . That simple pleasure in its forms and colours - which
is independent of its place - intention - or attendant circumstances of any kind.
I call the pleasure of simple Beauty
<Ideas of beauty> are to be received not only from simple forms or colours. but
15 <from combinations> or modes of form & colour .
Observe. I do not say that this pleasure is independent of our Intellectual
powers. it is only independent of their immediate exertion . Our feelings
of aversion and regard are most intimately associated with our powers of thought
and probably were based by the Deity on <objects> qualities of objects which
20   are illustrative to the intellect of his own nature .  But that ^{desire & aversion}
     									                           which was made
