perceptions of fitness <&c> propriety - & relation. which are purely intellectual.
and through these we arrive at our noblest ideas of what is commonly
& rightly called "Intellectual beauty." Association also is a<n>
source of ideas of beauty partially intellectual. But in no{ne} <case of> these
5 cases is there <direct &> immediate exertion of the intellect* - that
is to say <that> if a person receiving even the noblest ideas of
simple beauty be asked "Why he likes the object exciting them "
he will not be able to give any distinct reason . nor to trace in
his mind any formed thought . to which he can appeal as a source
10 of pleasure . He will say that the thing gratifies - excites - hallows -
exalts - his mind - but he will not be able to say why or how -
<or te> If he can . and if he can show that he perceives in the object
<that> any expression of distinct thought. ^ {<that> any subject for definite
exertion of intellect} he had received more than
an idea of beauty . it is an idea of Relation ..
15 Ideas of beauty are among the noblest which can be presented to the
human mind . invariably exalting & purifying it . according to their
degree . and it would appear that we are intended by the Deity to
be constantly under their influence - because there is not one single
object in nature which is not capable of conveying them. <&> which
20 to the rightly perceiving mind, does not present an infinitely greater

Of Ideas of Relation.
Under this head I class all those sources of pleasure which must be
understood before they can be felt. all which involve {& require}- at the instant
of their perception - a <volun> active exertion of the Intellectual powers .
5 All beauty dependent on fitness - propriety and association . All thoughts
properly so called - and generally - those ideas which are the aim of
<all> the highest art - {&} which address all our highest powers of contemplation
and reflection. come under this head .
