One of the fifty-one drawings made by Turner in the summer of 1817 on a tour of Holland, Belgium and the Rhine, and which were acquired by Walter Fawkes. Ruskin 's reference is probably to the largest of these, Rudesheim, looking to Bingen Klopp, watercolour, National Museum of Wales, Cardiff ( Wilton 639).
J.M.W. Turner 1775-1851

Further Comments: Even though this watercolour, otherwise known as 'Rüdesheim, looking towards the Binger Loch', is one of the largest of the 1817 works, it is actually based on some of the smallest sketches from that year.
