Altorf (Altdorf) is in central Switzerland south west of Lucerne (Luzern) near the confluence of the River Reuss and the Schächen torrent. Capital of the Uri canton, it is on the Mont St Gothard railway line. It was home to the legendary William Tell. Ruskin 's visits to Aldorf include those made in 1858, 1861 and 1862, the work done on these visits contributing to the advancement of his geological studies.
