Avernus

Averno (ancient Avernus) is a small crater lake lying between Cumae and Puteoli near the Tyrrhenian Sea in Campania, southern Italy. Its intense sulphurous vapours, caused by now dormant volcanic activity, which were supposedly fatal to birds, and its gloomy aspect to which Ruskin alludes caused the ancient Romans to regard it as the entrance to Hades.
