The Gulf of Genoa is in the Ligurian Sea in north west Italy on the shore of which is situated the city of Genoa. Ruskin writes of the importance of the serpentines of the promentories projecting into the gulf for the 'perculiar spirit of the Tuscan and Ligurian Gothic' which reaches its pinnacle in the Duomo and the Campanile at Florence.
