Padua

Padua (Padova) was founded, as legend would have it, by the Trojan hero, Anetor. A prosperous town in the early medieval period, Padua was home to the poet Dante. Its many significant sites include the Capella degli Scrovegni, with its famous frescoes by Giotto, the cathedral and the basilica. Ruskin described Giotto's frescoes in Giotto and his works in Padua (1853-60). The University of Padua, founded in 1222, is the second oldest in Italy, after the University of Bologna. Ruskin refers to the view north from Padua of the Lombardy plain. Ruskin visits to Padua included those made in 1841, 1845, 1846, 1850, 1869 and 1870.
