By Kind Permission of a Private Collection
Drawn and etched by Turner. Engraved in mezzotint by Say. Dated 1811 and published in Part 6 of the Liber Studiorum ( Finberg 30). Category: Mountainous. (See Forrester, p.89.)
In The Elements of Drawing (1857), Ruskin recommends study of this plate as one of the 'most desirable' Liber Studiorum subjects ( Works, 15.98). An impression was included in the Oxford Educational Series (1870); Ruskin commented that the site of Turner 's subject was easily found, and although a visitor would 'think at first the place itself much more beautiful than Turner's study, 'Turner... has put into this single scene the spirit of Scotland' ( Works, 21.135). A more extensive discussion along similar lines is given in Lectures on Landscape (1871) ( Works, 22.35-38).
