The Keepsake

With the increasing sophistication of engraving, especially on steel, came a plethora of 'gift books' and 'annuals', from the late 1820s to the early 1840s. One of the best was The Keepsake, launched by the publisher Charles Heath in 1827, with a typical mix of poems, stories and engraved illustrations: the first volume sold 15,000 copies at a guinea each. It was last issued in 1856. Some seventeen plates after Turner appeared between 1828 and 1837 ( Rawlinson 319-335). See Herrmann, Turner Prints, pp.164-6.
