Shylock

The name by which Ruskin referred to Turner 's The Grand Canal, Venice, oil on canvas, exhibited Royal Academy 1837, Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, California ( Wilton P368); the catalogue entry included verses from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The painting was bought by John James Ruskin for 800 guineas in April 1847, and sold by Ruskin in 1872.
