Landseer

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873). Animal painter. Received early instruction from his father, the engraver John Landseer (1761-1852). In 1815, Studied under B. R. Haydon who encouraged the study of anatomy. Displayed an early talent for animal painting. Entered Royal Academy schools 1816. Travelled to Scotland in 1824 and visited Sir Walter Scott. ARA 1826, RA 1831. Knighted 1850. Declined the Presidency of the Royal Academy on the death of Sir Charles Eastlake (1793-1865). Close friend of the younger artists William Powell Frith (1819-1909) and John Everett Millais (1829-1896). Buried in St Paul's Cathedral alongside Turner, Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) and Reynolds. Exhibited 286 works (see Ruskin and Landseer).
