Frederick Richard Lee RA (1798-1879). Painter of landscapes seascapes and still life. Born in Barnstaple, Devon where he spent most of his life. Commissioned into the Army as a young man but resigned due to ill health. In 1818, entered the Royal Academy Schools. Elected ARA 1834, RA, 1838. From 1824 to 1870 exhibited at the Royal Academy showing mainly views in Devon and Scotland. Also exhibited at the British Institution and Society of British Artists. Landscapes idealised and rustic/sentimental. Sometimes worked in collaboration with the animal painter T. Sidney Cooper (1803-1902), and with Landseer. Retired from RA in 1872 and died in South Africa. Ruskin commented on a picture by Lee, The Breakwater at Plymouth, in his Academy Notes, 1856 (RA. No 221), ( Works, 14.57).
