Linnell

John Linnell (1792-1882). Landscape painter in oil and watercolour. Born in London, son of a carver and gilder and general art dealer. Studied under John Varley with William Henry Hunt and William Mulready. Entered Royal Academy Schools in 1805 under patronage of Benjamin West (1728-1820). Became a member of the' Monro Academy' through his association with Dr. Thomas Monro. First concentrated on painting portraits. Became a member of the Old Water-Colour Society in 1812. Resigned in 1820 in order to work on landscape painting and in oil. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1807-82. Friend of William Blake (1759-1827) to whom he gave help. Retired to Redhill, Surrey in 1852. Linnell's daughter Hannah married Samuel Palmer in 1837.
