Nesfield

William Andrews Nesfield (1793-1881). Landscape painter of waterfalls and marines in watercolour. Born in Chester-le-Street. Son of the rector of Brancepath, Durham. Educated at Winchester, Trinity College Cambridge and Woolwich. Entered army 1809, and served in Peninsular war under Wellington. Retired in 1816. Began painting and was influenced by the work of Turner and G. F. Robson. Member of the Old Water-Colour Society 1823-1851. Retired in 1852 and began to work as a landscape gardener. Participated in the layout of some of the London parks and Kew Gardens. Father of William E. Nesfield (1835-1888), architect.
