George Fennel Robson (1788-1883). Born in Durham, son of a wine merchant and first worked under a local artist. Studied the wood engravings of Thomas Bewick's (1753-1828). Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807. Member of the Associated Artists in Water Colours. Became a member of the Old Water-Colour Society 1813 and President in 1819. Published 40 soft ground etchings under the title Scenery of the Grampian Mountains in 1814. Exhibited 700 works mainly at the Old Water Colour Society. Ruskin links Robson's name with Fielding in The Art of England (1883-1884) and also makes reference in Notes on Prout and Hunt (1879-1880). In his discussion of the Water Colour Societies, Ruskin listed Robson alongside Fielding, Cox, Prout, and De Wint as forming 'a true and progressive school' ( Works, 14.247)
