Ruskin commented on Palmer 's Going to India (No 256) in the Old Water-Colour Society, (1858), 'which looks at first cruder and harsher than it is, but gains by a long look, and has deep feeling in it' ( Works, 14.203-4). In a letter of 28 June 1845 to George Richmond (1809-1896) Ruskin told him to 'Tell Palmer with my kind regards that he is wrong about the quality of colour in Giorgione's landscapes' ( Works, 36.52). He also told Richmond on 1 May [1848] 'What fine things (the red and blue Christian excepted) Palmer has in the Water Colour' ( Works, 36.89).
