Reviews of Modern Painters I, September 1851-December 1855

The period following the publication of The Stones of Venice I was also that during which the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites were attracting critical attention, the name of Ruskin becoming connected with these artists following the publication of Pre-Raphaelitism (1851). Blackwood's Magazine, already hostile to Ruskin, energetically disputed his authority as a critic (See Blackwood's Magazine, September 1851, Blackwood's Magazine, July 1853, Blackwood's Magazine, December 1855, Ruskin and Blackwood's, and Ruskin and Eagles). The dispute between conservative critics and progressive critics was revived by the publication of Modern Painters III in 1856 (see Reviews of Modern Painters I, March 1856-November 1856).
