Summary of review of Modern Painters I, Spectator, 7 December 1844.

This review from the Spectator provides an interesting contrast to those published in the Athenaeum, 3 and 10 February 1844 and Blackwood's Magazine, October 1843. While acknowledging that the author of Modern Painters I could be made to seem ridiculous merely by selecting particular passages to quote, this critic emphasises the positive elements of the work (see here), particularly its originality and accessibility (see here). Welcoming both Ruskin 's vindication of Turner (see here) as well as the spiritual emphasis of Modern Painters I, the critic quoted passages to illustrate its arguments (see here).
