Relevance of the research to policy and practice

The research is of direct relevance to policy with the UK Government required to comply with European Water Framework Directive and Bathing Waters Directive. A greater understanding of how current manure and livestock management practice impact on FIO transfers and what practices can be changed on farms will generate evidence from which to make policy and generate confidence in farmers that changing farming practice can reduce the impact on watercourses.

A greater understanding of farmer attitudes to manure and livestock management and their decision making process prior to implementing a management change will aid advisors and catchments officers (and policy makers) in implementing successful strategies for reducing the impact of agriculture on water quality.
