OPTIMUM VIEWING

This website was originally constructed on a PC with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, and an aspect ratio of 4:3. Since then, many more varieties of screens and screen resolutions have been introduced. We have adjusted it accordingly.
Screens with other aspect ratios (e.g. 16:9) and other resolutions will show a layout where the banner and text are sited in the middle of the screen with space to the left and right. Pace Jakob Nielsen, we have not made it a ‘liquid’ construction, because the transcription has to match the layout of lines in the image.
It is best viewed in 32-bit colour.

It should run well on a PC using Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and its successors, and Mozilla Firefox. We would welcome feedback from readers trying to run it on a MAC. It works on most smartphones and tablets.

NAVIGATION

For the main material, the Navigation Bar runs across the top of the page.

Information at the left shows where you are in the book or manuscript.
Icons at the right are for navigation. Run mouse across for identification of their functions, if this is not clear.
When you move from one window to another within the same manuscript/book page, the icon in the toolbar turns from white to green to show you where you are:

Links within the text are marked with a grey dotted line. When the mouse runs over it, the text changes colour and is highlighted:

This is a link

A click will usually produce an independent pop-up window which can be closed after viewing.
It will usually however contain more links: only close this window when you are sure you have visited everything you want to visit.

From the main index pages (versions of Journal, images, etc) the links lead directly to the relevant page.

BEWARE! If your browser has its pop-up blocker activated, the windows will still open, but not as elegantly as we would like or in the places we want them.   Please disable it if your browser gives you the choice. Google Maps and Video may not appear at all unless you temporarily disable it for material from this source and Google.
