Lancaster University's position as one of the top 10 research-led institutions in the country has been confirmed by the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise.

The University has a developing expertise in public health related work, mainly in the areas of medical statistics, epidemiology, environmental science and management. The University has extended this expertise into health-related research and enhanced this in 1996 with the establishment of an Institute for Health Research
