Welcome to the Department of History

You may have first encountered us through the Lancaster Pamphlets series published from the early 1980s, a pioneering attempt to bring the latest advances in historical research into the school classroom. Our commitment to bringing the highest quality historical scholarship together with innovative and committed teaching remains at the forefront of our objectives as we embark on a new era of opportunity, change and renewal.

The Department has benefited from substantial recent investments by the University in new academic posts, postgraduate support, library holdings, and facilities. We will be moving to new state–of–the–art premises in 2011. We have concurrently redesigned our degree schemes from BA to PhD. The objective of these investments and changes is to secure Lancaster’s position as a leading centre of historical teaching and research in the UK.

Our chronological range extends from the ninth to the twentieth century, our geographical spread encompasses Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Americas, and our intellectual foci range across social, political, economic, and cultural history. We host large AHRC–funded research projects, a prestigious Newton International Fellowship, and two academic journals. We mount several research symposia a year and our annual postgraduate conference Histfest attracts contributions from across the UK and beyond.

Whether you are a member of the Department’s academic staff, a postgraduate student in our rapidly expanding MA and PhD programmes, or an undergraduate spoiled for choice from our wide–ranging menu of varied course offerings, Lancaster is an exciting place to be.
