CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Revolutionary Films: Cycling and Cinema

This new book is a cultural history of cycling in global cinema and new screen cultures, considering the cultural significance of the bicycle and the practice of cycling as, variously, leisure activity, transportation device, professional sports apparatus, consumer good, a means of creative expression and a means of protest.

Teaching Transnational Cinema: Politics and Pedagogy.

I am working with Dr Katarzyna Marciniak (Ohio) on an edited collection of essays on the political, philosophical and methodological challenges of teaching transnational cinema. This is currently in process with a provisional publication date in 2015 with Routledge in its 'AFI Film Readers' series.

The Cinema of Nuri Bilge Ceylan

I am working with Bulent Diken (Sociology) Graeme Gilloch (Sociology), and Craig Hammond on a critical study of the Turkish film-maker, Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

The Cinema of Michael Bay: an aesthetics of excess.

I am co-editing a 'dossier' for the online Film Studies journal, Senses of Cinema, on the Hollywood director, Michael Bay, in conjunction with Dr Bruce Isaacs (Sydney University, Aus.) and Dr Leon Gurevitch (University of Victoria, NZ). This will also include contributions from Brian Baker (English and Creative Writing, Lancaster), Mark Kerins, and Lisa Purse. This is due for publication in Spring 2015.

Convergence culture and digital animation.

I am co-writing an essay on the representation and symbolism of space in contemporary screen cultures with Dr Leon Gurevitch (University of Victoria, NZ).

Design fictions, design futures.

I am in the early stages of developing a project with Dr Martyn Evans (LICA) on the history and critical function of 'design fiction'.
