Style: what is it?

Task C - Style comparison

The five sentences below say roughly the same thing.

  • The Horse has died.

  • The stallion has met his maker.

  • The filly has snuffed it.

  • The nag has kicked the bucket.

  • The steed has expired.

Using a scale of 1-5, with 1 being Informal, 3 being Neutral and 5 being Formal, what do you think is the relevant style for each sentence.
Consider what linguistic level is being used to create the different styles.
