Student Engagement with Augmented Reality in Distance Learning

Technology in education has evolved drastically in recent years, particularly with the rise of mobile device utilisation. Additionally, the use of visual interaction technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) has enabled more dynamic learning experiences. This study will explore whether Augmented Reality can make education more engaging for students in a distance learning environment.

The study will investigate key topics around student engagement, mobile device-based AR and technology in education. The topic of this study was chosen because of increased momentum of AR in education, the wide availability of AR in modern mobile devices, as well as a personal interest in mobile app development.

To investigate this, a small-scale AR mobile app will be developed for students to interact with, and data with be gathered through observation notes, surveys and structured interviews.

It is expected that trends will be found in the collected data which support the use of augmented reality in a distance learning environment, primarily focusing on student engagement. The outcome of this study would inform if augmented reality is a worthwhile investment for educational institutions, as well as whether it provides an engaging learning experience for students.

What are you researching?

The research is focused on the development of an augmented reality app that would be used to aid flipped learning.

Why are you researching it?

Augmented Reality has gained more traction in recent years, particularly with mobile devices becoming more powerful. Most smartphones and tablets shipped today have the capability to support augmented reality experiences. 

With mobile devices being utilised ever more frequently in education, it is important to consider how augmented reality plays a part in that.

How are you carrying out your Investigation?

Primary research was conducted in the form of a Literature Review to gain knowledge on three main topics; Augmented Reality, Development Environments and Flipped Learning. 

This valuable research was used to inform the design of the development, and was considered throughout the development process.

A journal containing detailed accounts of the development process is being kept, which shall be analysed upon completion of the development to identify issues and best practises.

As the research is still on-going, there are no finding to report at this time.
