Barriers in education for disabled international students

Armineh Soorenian, University Of Leeds

Abstract

This research is concerned with disabled international students' experiences and the barriers faced in their time within English universities. This is particularly significant given the limited existing research conducted in the field. Through thirty interviews and two focus groups with students from various universities, many difficulties have been identified, including limited funding opportunities. A further three interviews with staff will be conducted in order to learn more about these barriers and ways of removing them. From these findings, it is hoped that it might be possible to make recommendations to relevant educational bodies for changing their policies in the areas concerned. This research also aims to justify establishing an organisation solely focusing upon disabled international students' needs in light of their growing numbers in UK universities and limited support and advice available. Consequently, this presentation will provide an overview of key insights emerging from the above study.
