tinted.
Capitals at p 14 w St M. Their general profile is
a very beautiful conic section; fig 3: and this is exhibited
on their edges by the keel like ridge left by their cutting away
as seen in section fig 2 and profile fig 4 which gives
the ornament on the internal angle. The stones have
however four sometimes instead of eight rays.
I never saw so subtle a combination of concave, and
convex, and right lines
The leaf patterns are all cut hollow only supported
by irregular props, as seen in section fig 2. They
are varied in every capital.

capital It has the loveliest section I ever saw, carefully given on
No 170 more especially its lovely inner line; which I only
saw by the accident of its lower basket work being all
broken away: and it is indeed only formed by the chisel
within side of the bracket, by a kind of instinct - and
it is of no use, except like a kind of fine under anatomy
ruling the outside lines: but when these are gone, it is left
- not so smooth as I have drawn it, for the chisel works
roughly in the dark - but quite as beautiful in main contact
