DUCAL PALACE TRACERIES
Cavette better given at fig 2. The cavette being
deeper than a the filling of it projects as an
oval: overlapping also its edge: almost coming in con-
tact with roll: It is cut off short and flat and is very
2 ungraceful, though somewhat grand. Each of the five
rolls, in the C. ft of height, comes twice round to the
side on which it starts: and then touches the top or
bottom - on the side opposite - going twice and a
half round shaft - thus dividing it also in five.
Fig 1 is the base of this shaft; very flat in cavette,
having in one shaft - four delicate leaves ribbed -
of the outer arcade pattern and curled over in the other
two lions heads, and two leaves arranged most singularly
as opp: Entire height from d to a2 about 9 in: The lower
member of this base is most singular, raised out of the
plinth of the window: and actually this plinth is in two
pieces under the base, as opp. It would be difficult to
draw in perspective.
The management of the lateral capital, with its semicir-
cular twisted shaft, is shown in No 64 fig 2. There
ought to be two lions heads, with a leaf between over the
shaft, but there are broken away on this side, and
injured on the other: All are magnificent: altogether
different in style from the centr[a]al capitals - and as
grand as could be . The noblest instance I have yet seen
of a banded capital: for so it is in great part; It pro-
jects boldly however
