[M.89L] [M.89] Ducal palace. Traceries 89
cavetto better given at fig 2. The cavetto being deeper than
a [diagram] the filling of it projects as an oval: overlapping also
[diagram] its edge: almost coming in contact with roll: It is cut off
[diagram] 2 short & flat and is very ungraceful, though somewhat grand -
Each of the five rolls, in the 6 ft of height, comes twice
round to the side on which it starts: and then touches the
top or bottom - on the side opposite: going twice & a half
round shaft - thus dividing it also in five.
Fig 1 is the base of this shaft; very flat in cavetto, having
in one shaft - four delicate leaves ribbed - of the outer
arcade pattern & curled over; in the other two lions heads & two leaves
arranged most singularly as opp: Entire height from d to
1 a2 about 9 in: The lower member of this base is most
singular, raised out of the plinth of the window: and
actually this plinth is in two pieces under the base
as opp. It would be difficult to draw in perspective.
The management of the lateral capital, with its semicircular
twisted shaft, is shown in No 64 fig 2. There ought to be two
lions heads, with a leaf between over the shaft, but these are
3 broken away on this side, & injured on the other: All are
magnificent: altogether different in style from the central capitals
- and as grand as could be . The noblest instance I have yet seen of
a banded capital: for so it is in great part; It projects boldly however
