Milan

Capital of the Italian region of Lombardy, Milan (Milano) is home to some of the greatest art collections in Europe, including that held in the Brera Gallery. Ruskin visited Milan on his visits to Italy in 1833, 1841, 1845, 1846, 1849, 1851, 1862, 1869, 1870, 1872, 1876, 1877 and 1888. In 1833 he was impressed by the architecture of the Cathedral ( Works, 35.117) although he later called it 'base modern Gothic' ( Works, 12.93) and, following the trip of 1849, a mixture of every style, stolen and spoiled ( Works, 9.469).
