This aspect of the programming was central to the original scope of this edition. It was necessary to develop a method of automatically linking the hypertext annotations to the facsimile images without distorting their historical integrity, in order to preserve the sense of history informing the rationale behind this edition.
Work on this aspect of the programming began early in the project and an algorithm was developed by the editor and Aalia Wayfare that identified the line-breaks within the facsimile pages. This has been considerably refined and implemented by the Software Director.
