Croly

Rev. Dr. George Croly (1780-1860). Clergyman and critic. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1804, he moved to London in 1810, where he became drama critic for the New Times, and a contributor to the Literary Gazette and Blackwood's Magazine. Rector of St. Stephen's, Walbrook from 1835, he also wrote leaders for the Britannia, and poetry in the style of Byron. Although Ruskin disliked his preaching, Croly's friendship with John James Ruskin ensured a sympathetic review of Modern Painters I (See Works, 1.409, and Britannia, 9 December 1843).
